About Us

Our Story

Justice Support International CIC was established in 2023 by international lawyers who had spent years on the ground in Afghanistan, building rule-of-law programmes, training judges, and working alongside the legal professionals who held the country's justice system together. When the Taliban returned to power and that system collapsed, we did not walk away from the people we had worked with. We turned those relationships into a lifeline.

We began by providing emergency funding and assistance identifying and applying to safe pathways for Afghans at risk, working alongside the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, whose Afghan assistance programme we have now fully absorbed and lead.

Afghanistan is where our story started. It is not where it ends. Legal professionals face persecution wherever the rule of law is under attack. Lawyers targeted for representing the wrong client, judges threatened for an independent verdict, human rights defenders criminalised for doing their jobs. JSI exists to protect them.

Our Approach

  • Founded by practitioners with decades of on-the-ground experience

  • Deep existing networks with legal professionals, enabling trust-based, high-quality case management

  • Pro bono model: six global law firms and  volunteer lawyer and non-lawyers give their expertise at no cost to clients

  • Referral methodology developed across six countries, informed by UNHCR standards and international protection law

  • Advancing individual access to pathways as durable solutions
